Merlion Park: A Welcoming Symbol for Visitors



Merlion Park is a must-see if you are flying to Singapore. In the park is located in Marina Bay, a statue of a lion's head which became the mascot for the country of Singapore. The Merlion was first designed as an emblem of the Singapore Tourist Promotion Board in 1964. Merlion and children, "Cub", originally located in front of the Singapore River, just across from the Elizabeth Walk, only 120 meters from its present location. The area is also known as the Merlion Park has become a popular tourist attraction in Singapore and became one of the famous places in the cities of the world.


Merlion statue was designed by Mr. Fraser Brunner, a member of the committee souvenirs and curator of the Van Kleef Aquarium. Merlion is a mysterious creature which is its head is lion and the body is fish. In terms of language, Mer means sea, and lion means lion. Fish body symbolizes that Singapore as a place with a lot of fishermen. In Merlion Park, the statue has a height of 8.6 meters and weighs of 70 tons, it built from cement by Singapore artist, Mr. Lim Nang Seng. The second Merlion is smaller, it has two meters of high and weighing of three tons, it was also built by Mr. Lim. Merlion Cub is located 28 meters behind the Merlion. It also installed a pump system for Merlion’s children, so it can spout water throughout the day and night.
So, there are many tourists who ever been in Singapore believed that they have to take a photo in front of Merlion’s statue in Merlion Park. It is as the evidence that they had been visiting this country. Merlion park opens for 24 hours, so do not be afraid of this place is closed. Although this place is crowded at night with people who take pictures or just sits on the beach. You do not need a ticket to get into this park. Merlion Park is a famous place, so it is very easy to go to this place. When you use the MRT, you can get off at the Rafles Place station and go out through Exit B toward office buildings and behind it you will see the Singapore River. Near the river is Hotel Fullerton, walk back to the hotel, and you see the fork in the road. Cross the greatest way. Merlion Park is covering an area of 2,500 square meters. At One Fullerton, there are a variety of restaurants, lounges and dance clubs on the river bank. This area also has a cape with patio seating and a deck to watch that can accommodate up to 300 people and it has a boat landing place so that visitors can come down from the taxi boats. This deck gives a view of the Merlion with skyline city’s background and the beautiful Marina Bay, including the landmark buildings such as The Fullerton Singapore and Esplanade Theatres on the Bay.
