Esplanade - Theatres on the Bay
Esplanade is one of the icons of Singapore. It’s on
the right next to
the Merlion statue located in Merlion Park. It is one of the world's busiest arts
centers, officially opened on October 12, 2002.
In 1992, It elected a team of well-known local firm DP Architects
(Singapore) and Michael Wilford & Partners (UK) to start the construction
work of the art center. To maintain the link between the past and the present,
the art center is eventually named the Esplanade - Theatres on the Bay.
Esplanade aims to be a performing arts center for all
people, and programs to reach out to a wider range of audience. Structure of
the program covers all genres, including music, dance, theater and visual arts,
with a special focus on Asian culture.
Currently, architectural icon with its distinctive
twin shells is sited within Singapore's civic district, just by Marina Bay at
the mouth of the Singapore River. Esplanade comprises two large halls: the
2,000-seat theater and a 1,600-seat Concert Hall, and is equipped with two
smaller studios, an outdoor theater and a mall. Two domes which became the
location of Theatre and Concert Hall designed with glass material, to give the
impression of openness. To keep the center cool in the tropics, more than 7,000
pieces of aluminum sun visor with double glazing frame padded cover mounted on
the steel support frame to form a cover that makes this art center a dazzling
architectural icon, ahead of Singapore's city skyline. The spiky cladding
eventually became a popular nickname based on local fruit, Durian.
The concept of this building
some resembles a pair of
eyes facet grasshopper with the idea of petals open as openings to light.
Esplanade Theatre is located at the edge of the bay,
close to tourist attractions Merion. Function Esplanade Theatre is a venue
Singapore citizen in art. Therefore, all the supporting elements of this
building is a remarkable work of art.
Reflecting pool with the same concept with a high
water plaza and quiet, made cozy atmosphere. There is a decorative lamp with
lighting special spherical placed randomly.
Esplanade Outdoor Theatre, directly overlooking the
Marina Bay and has a length of about 300m, this outdoor theater has a seating
capacity of about 450 to 600 (standing) people. This place is often used as the
venue of a variety of music to dance and theater arts that we can watch while
enjoying a refreshing sea and stunning scenery.
Surrounded by high-rise buildings in the city,
including the floor of Swiss hotel 70 (The Stamford), the Esplanade is also designed
to be seen from above.
Since the beginning, consultants who designed the Esplanade, in collaboration with
performing arts organizations to ensure that Singapore's Esplanade will
accommodate a wide variety of performing arts, both East and West, as well as
the most advanced multimedia presentations.
While the place is still pretty with West design, there is a distinctive characteristic of
Asia, such
as indoor and outdoor theater. A place to relax is a place that reflects the
performance of Asia. There are places to eat and drink at the Esplanade Mall. The consultants, who are members of the Esplanade
design, develop three major devices in the Concert Hall to create some of the
most flexible acoustics in the world.
