Ubin Island






Not only buildings and malls, Singapore still has natural attractions such as Ubin Island. It called Ubin Island since the British colonial era, the island was used as a granite rock quarry tile base / floor. Ubin Island covers only 10 km2 and located in the northeast of Singapore, bordering Malaysia.

With the closing of a granite quarry in the 70s, the island was re-inhabited by a variety of wildlife - especially birds. Vegetation is maintained, make this island lush and become the object of the natural destination for Singaporeans, either just for a walk or bike ride.

Ubin Island is one of the islands in Singapore. Its located in Johor Strait east of Changi airport. Its origin, according to legend Malay, is the immemorial there are three animals such as frogs, pigs and elephants. They challenge each other to reach the beach in Johor (Malaysia). However, the animals failed to reach the coast of Johor. Pig and elephant fused into the island of Ubin Island and frogs into Sekudu.

When the days of British colonialism was found on the island of granite tiles, Ubin Island found granite mining. Granite was used as the manufacture of flooring / tiles for building in Singapore including Johor.


 

Now, since around 1970, mining granite slowly began to shut down. 1999 mining in Ubin Island officially closed. Many miners granite leave this island to the island of Singapore. Now Ubin Island is very uiet, but being a good destination to explore other parts of Singapore. Another advantage with the closing of this mining is a lot of birds and other animals come back to this island. Vegetation was also growing.

Many residents of Singapore visited the island just to release the fatigue or for exercise bike.
There are several ways to achieve this Ubin Island.
You may use a taxi, but it will be expensive. Or it could also use the MRT, alight at Tanah Merah station and further by using the SBS Transit bus No. 2 towards Changi Village Terminal. Down at Changi Village Terminal, and then go straight to Changi Point Ferry Terminal. Direction instructions are very easy. Jump down the stairs leading to the dock. There are two directions that a boat heading to island to island Tile or Pengerang. Special to the island Pengerang, must carry a passport, because the island belonged to Malaysia.





Boat (also called bumboat) that leads to the island tiles will wait until the full 12 passengers. It costs only S $ 2.50 per person. When you cannot wait you can pay Sing S $ 30 for a straight road. Interestingly, when the payments drawn on the boat, so no need to queue to buy ticket.

The trip itself will take about 10-15 minutes. Once the dock Ubin
Island, we are greeted with clear water. No taste in Singapore, although at a distance looked aircraft will land or fly, plus apartment buildings.

On the dock Ubin Island many bicycles or motorcycles along the road to the island. These vehicles are belonging to the inhabitants of Ubin Island. Ubin Island has not a school or a large store that sells groceries.
